Combined Surgical & Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontic Treatment in Omaha, NE
At Pedodontics, P.C., we strive to provide high-quality orthodontic treatment in a warm, welcoming, and professional office environment. Our doctors and highly trained team of orthodontic professionals work with every patient on an individual level, designing personalized treatment plans that perfectly suit each patient’s unique orthodontic needs. In the vast majority of cases, we can effectively treat orthodontic problems solely with orthodontic appliances like braces or Invisalign – but in some more severe cases, we may need to combine traditional orthodontics with surgical procedures.
When Orthodontic Surgery is Necessary
During early orthodontic treatment, we can use special appliances to influence the growth of the teeth and the jaws. Sometimes, though, even with interceptive treatment, the jaws don’t line up correctly when they finish developing. This can cause severe problems with underbite, overbite, and a variety of other orthodontic conditions. In these cases, orthodontic treatment alone isn’t enough to achieve a healthy smile. That’s when surgery can help.
If we decide surgery is the right treatment for you, your doctor will consult with an orthodontic surgeon to determine what we’ll need to do prior to surgery to prepare you for the procedure. Generally, we’ll use braces to straighten your teeth for anywhere between 8 and 18 months prior to your surgery. Once the teeth are aligned, we’ll perform the surgery. Surgery generally takes several hours, although this will depend on the complexity of your specific case.
Post-Surgical Care
It will take about two weeks of downtime to recover from your surgery, so we recommend patients undergo surgery during a school break or during vacation time. You’ll likely require orthodontic treatment after surgery, although the length and extent of this treatment depends on your specific case. After you finish the active stage of treatment, you’ll need to wear a retainer – but we’ll give you specific instructions for wearing and caring for your retainer after your treatment is finished.
