When Should Your Child’s First Visit to the Dentist Be?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child’s first checkup is at the age of one. Even though there may only be a few baby teeth that are visible, there are plenty of ways that we can help your child. This includes checking for early tooth decay in the teeth that are there, reviewing proper ways to help your child maintain great oral hygiene, and also getting your child to feel comfortable and accustomed with going to the dentist.
In Preparation of the Big Day
Oftentimes, the person who’s most nervous on the day of a child’s first dental visit is the parent! If you can, try to keep this nervousness bottled up. Kids have an uncanny way of picking up on their parents’ feelings; by showing your nervousness, you’ll only make a child more nervous as well. Let your child know what to expect at the visit, but don’t make too big of a deal about it.
When you come in for the visit, we recommend that you bring a toy, a snack, or even an extra diaper, just in case. If it’s possible, leave any other kids at home or bring along another adult to watch them so that we’ll be able to focus all of our attention on the new patient. Also, if you want to fill out our patient forms in advance, this will save time and effort on the day of the appointment.
Your Child’s Checkup
After you and your child are seated in our office, we’ll spend a few minutes getting to know each other, letting you get acclimated, and explaining what we’ll be doing. We’ll first perform a gentle examination of your child’s mouth. This is to look for any early signs of dental problems, such as tooth decay, and assessing the risk that your child may develop any dental disease in the future. This risk assessment can allow us to prevent – or even reverse – the early stages of tooth decay without the need for drilling.
Afterward, we’ll discuss how to keep your child’s oral health in top condition. We may talk about a child’s diet, eating habits, and oral hygiene practices that can help prevent tooth decay. If any treatments are needed, we’ll explain what they are, how they work, and why we recommend them. Finally, we’ll go over some tips on brushing effectively and we’ll even schedule a follow-up visit.
